Sight seeing...

Karen and I took a little tour of Idaho Falls today although it was rather cold. We had a walk around on the trails in the green belt which today was more like the white belt as you can see in the pictures. I got a couple of pictures of the falls, and of course, my favorite lady.

Stayin' Warm!

Well, we had a very nice time on Christmas with Krista, Karen's daughter, and her family. The first picture is Krista with the YES on her shirt, Karen and 2 of Krista's kids. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with Krista and Curtis, her husband. I really want to get down to Logan and see some of that country and I'll be in the right place to do that after I move up here... but in the warm time of year though.

In the mornings we have been sitting in the kitchen near the wood stove having coffee and breakfast so it dawned on me to take a picture of that. It's very cozy in Karen's house and I just love it here. This morning I spent a considerable amount of time shoveling snow off the roof and then cleaning up the mess it made. It is warmer today than it has been the whole time I have been here, the thermometer says 44 which is really nice compared to the 20's we have been having for highs. Karen had a hair appointment this morning so it gave me some time to get a few things done. I have to say, I'm not looking forward to going back to Susanville at all, but I will have to be doing that soon. I'm going to miss my new little family until I can get moved. Oh well...

Fun in Idaho

I just love seeing Karen sitting next to me in my truck so I had to take this picture before we went out the other day to go shopping. The snow has been getting deeper around here and with the wind there were some rather deep drifts as you can see on the roof of her house.

Christmas is over for another year and soon the year will be over too and since it has been such a bad one for Karen we can say good riddance in about a week.

The pictures on this page are from the past few days, I just haven't had time to post any so I'm playing catch up. There is one of us sitting at the kitchen table having coffee and checking email, of course I'm not in the picture, I took it. That's Cody, Karen's Grandson sitting there with her.

I also wanted to get one of the scene out her back window, which is the next one down. I really want to see this view when it is green.

I'm having such a great time here and I'll be having to leave soon to go back to Susanville and I'm NOT looking forward to that at all! The problem with life is that nothing is final or static. There is always another chapter or an end to the good times. In the same respect there is always an end to the bad times too so I guess it all evens out, huh? Nevertheless my trip here will be ending soon and I'll have to head back down the road, a drive that will not be a fun one for me.

But for now, it's all good. I took a picture the other day of Karen wrapping presents on my bed downstairs. I like this spot and it's right in front of the downstairs wood stove and if you look closely you'll see I had a fire going. I really miss wood heat and I have been making fires regularly while I have been here and they make the place nice and cozy!

Hey Tom, check out the gas prices here. It was $1.41 the other day when I got gas so it has gone up a couple of pennies I see. I gave the lady $20 and actually got change after filling my tank from near empty. It's been a while since I did that.

One of the attractions in this town is the fountain in this last picture. I don't know what it looks like when the water isn't hard but it's quite interesting when it's all frozen. Karen had showed me a picture of this but there was nothing to give it any perspective and I didn't know how big it was until I saw it. There is a round-about that goes all the way around it and it's on the way to Walmart so I've been there several times. I took that picture as I was driving since I couldn't talk Karen into getting out to pose for me. (She didn't want to climb over the big pile of snow, and I don't blame her.)

Shopping!

Spent the last 2 days out and about on the town with Karen doing her last minute Christmas shopping. We had lunch yesterday at the Highway Cafe which is a local eatery and had a very interesting and quite good 3 course lunch. The roads were trying to thaw out some but every now and then you still had to use 4-wheel drive to get around. No new snow today, but Christmas day we are supposed to be getting another dose and on top of what we already have, it will really be a white Christmas here.

Today Karen and I spent shopping again and had lunch at another local place in the same shopping center where her office is. She was joking with me about being bored but it's all good for me, I'm not only enjoying everything we have done so far but also the company as well. Tomorrow her daughter Krista and her family are coming up from Logan Utah and we are fixing dinner. Good times, no doubt! I have a few pictures I took today but I will post them tomorrow.

Church Service at Karen's

Sunday we had a nice dinner and church service at Karen's for her second church group. Ham, and a bunch of other stuff were on the menu. I had the honor of cooking the ham but the dinner was a group effort. Sonny is the gentleman sitting at the head of the table and he is the pastor for this church. Sonny is also a pretty good chess player and he beat me, which was the first loss I had so far since I got here. Nothing wrong with getting beat by a man with God on his side, is there? It was a great day and with lots of good food and company Karen will make me a socialite yet.

The weather continues to be interesting up here, it snowed about 8" yesterday so now we have about a foot of snow on the ground. The street got plowed today so now you can drive without getting stuck. Ya gotta love it! Yep! I do!

A little cold!

Well, my drive up to Idaho was pretty uneventful. There were some bad roads along the way but they really weren't that bad. Instead of cruising along at 75, I had to slow down to 60 or so. That was until I got about 10 miles out of Idaho Falls, then the weather started deteriorating and I had to actually use 4-wheel drive after I got off the freeway, to get around town. It was all good though and it took me about 12 hours to drive from Susanville.

The second picture is my truck sitting in front of Karen's house.

Karen is finishing up her tax classes this week so I got a picture of her with her class. She is so comfortable teaching this class and they all seem to be very nice people. Needless to say she is looking forward to Friday when it is all over.

I have been looking for rentals a little, there are a couple quite close by so I'm hoping I can get something lined up while I'm here and get this moving business started.

OK, talk about cold! It was 2° this morning but it almost got above freezing yesterday and it might again today since the sun is out. The roads have been slushy snow or ice depending on the time of day so I have been walking as much as I can when I have to go out. Karen has a nice house and her sister in law Debbe and her grandson Cody also live here with her. She has this nice foot warmer under her computer desk which I have my feet on right now and I'll tell you, this is the ticket! Ya gotta love it! Oh yes, and I do!

Leaving for the great white north

I'll be leaving in the morning to head to Idaho to see my favorite lady. The weather has not been all that good today and there were chain controls up this morning on I-80 and north from Wells into Idaho. Things have improved some but Karen tells me that they got some heavy snow in Idaho Falls today, which I also saw on the traffic cams. The showery nature of this cold system is hit or miss and under some of these showers the roads can get pretty coated, so I'm hoping I am going to miss most of that tomorrow. We'll see.

Today there was a skiff of snow on the ground here in Susanville and the temperature today never got too warm. The best I saw on my thermometer was 33°. I walked around town today down to Walmart and back up town to the Post Office. Both times I was really cold and the wind made it even worse. When I went to buy some washer fluid for my truck I was shocked to find that good old Walmart only has +32° washer fluid. Where in the hell do these people think their store is located anyway? People, get some -20 stuff, that's what we need around here! Anyone who is putting that +32° stuff in their cars this time of year is asking for trouble. It's going to freeze up, duhhhh! Since the weather where I'm going is even colder than here, I couldn't even think about buying any of it. I'll get some in Idaho, I'm sure they must have the good stuff up there. OK, I'm off to see the wizard... no, Karen.

Fishing at Eagle Lake again

Today I went up to Eagle Lake and tried one last time to catch a few of those illusive critters. I say "last time" because it may very well be the last time I fish up there since I'll be gone to Idaho until after the first of the year and next fall I'll be living in Idaho. So I said my goodbyes and I also managed to catch one small one, which was good since the conditions were really bad. It was smooth and calm and not the way I like it but I didn't freeze my ass off either so that was good.
The moon made a nice picture this morning when I got there and as you can see it was almost full. Like I said, it was smooth and glassy and I felt privileged that I even got one fish to bite. It was too small to keep and I let it go. Had lots of stuff to do today to get all my work out of the way and get ready to head to Idaho. The weather for the next 4 or 5 days doesn't sound too good but I am hoping to get a chance to make the trip on Sunday, otherwise I might have to wait a few more days and I just don't want to do that. I don't mind snowy roads as long as it's not icy and blizzard conditions. Hope that doesn't happen!

Sunny before the arctic blast

The sun was nice and warm today for another long walk up the Bizz. There is supposed to be a major change in the weather this weekend with a 20° drop in high temps which sometimes translates into colder than they predicted. There is also some snow in the forecast which we can use, I just hope the weather doesn't cause me any travel problems for my trip to Idaho. I'm hoping for the best on that one.

It's going to be a long winter I am afraid, between missing Karen when we are apart and preparing for my impending move, I have lots to think about. It's all good though and my outlook is still that I gotta love it... and I do.

Fishing at Eagle Lake

Got up early this morning and went up to my usual spot at Eagle Lake. I left later than usual but still got there before I could see my bobber. Shorter days this time of year, in fact the winter solstice will be coming up on the 21st. That's the shortest day of the year, sunlight-wise for anyone who doesn't know that. But anyway, back to my fishing... I started getting bites right away and before too long I hooked one. The first 2 were small so they went back but I ended up getting some solid 2-3 lb fish like the ones in this picture. I landed 5, broke one off and had many bites, all within an hour of getting there, which made it all so special.

It was a little cold with a North wind blowing and my net froze up when it wasn't in the water. One of these fish on the stringer was giving me a good fight when the sun was hitting the hill across the lake behind me and it was just beautiful the way it was lit up. I went to get my camera after landing that fish but the good show was over and I didn't get any pictures of it. Still fresh in my mind though! A great day fishing and I was only there less than 2 hours. Next week I'll be heading to Idaho and I just can't hardly wait for that. You know why!

Climbin' Stony Ridge

I climbed to the top of Stony Ridge today from the bottom. I could have driven part way up but that would defeat the purpose so I walked from the main road. Karen was #1 in my thoughts like she always is. I kept thinking about how she would like the scenery along the way so I took plenty of pictures and even a couple of videos but the videos didn't do the walk justice so I'm not sharing them. Anyway, a beautiful day for a nice hike and some really pretty forested scenes.

The pointy peak in these pictures is Clarks Peak and if you look close to the peak on the right, you'll see the lookout at Thompson Peak.

My time doing these hikes is quickly coming to an end, as soon as the snow comes that will be the end of it for the year and I'll be gone to Idaho before the thaw in the spring. I can't wait to make this move, I'm just not happy here anymore without Karen. Ya think I have it bad? Yep!

Another day closer to seeing Karen again!

I took another walk today up on the Bizz. The cold nights are showing along the shore of the river and it's frozen over in the slowest places. This time of year makes for some interesting walks. There were almost no people out there and it was a Saturday, even. I did see a few, but not as many as I thought should be out on such a nice day. I walked up to the last bridge before Cady Spring and climbed up on the rim rock and sat in the sun listening to music. It was very comfortable and was really a nice thing to do today.

I'll be making a trip to Idaho in a couple of weeks and today I thought a lot about that and how I'm once again chomping at the bit to see Karen. I guess I'm just not going to be happy till I move closer to her for good. It's hard for me to keep living for the time I can get together with her again, I will be working toward making that move as soon as I can get the moons to line up and work out the logistics. I just love challenges, and this might end up being one. Nevertheless it will be happening soon.

Sun art

The sun sculpted this frost picture on the bridge up on the Bizz today. I've seen this before and it always looks cool. There were spots on the river that were frozen over, shades of things to come with winter fast approaching. I had around a 5 mile walk round trip and it was a pretty nice day for it. Not warm at all but the sun wasn't filtered by high clouds and was nice and strong and warm.

If this nice weather keeps coming, which I think it's supposed to, I might have to get back up in the woods the next couple of days and climb some more hills. It won't be long before I can't do that anymore till spring, and by then I might not be living here. Which will be a good thing, like Martha says.

Climbin' a hill!

Today I decided to climb up to a high spot for lunch and I picked a hill I had never climbed before. As you can see it was a nice day, not too warm as I had to keep my sweatshirt on even going up the steep spots. Never saw another person all day which was nice, but then I always say that, don't I? I have had my eye on this pointy hill for some time and today just seemed like the right day to climb up it. I had my mind on Karen the whole time, but again, that's been normal for me, hasn't it?

Honey Lake is dry this year and unless we start getting some wet stuff it might stay that way again next year. I guess I really don't care, by spring I will be living in Idaho and the cold and spiders will be my worst problems.

I had a roast going in my crockpot today so my house really smelled good when I got home early this afternoon, ya gotta love that way of fixing dinner! I do!!!!

Cool but not cold!

It wasn't exactly comfortable today but it was a good day for a long walk. I walked about 2½ miles up the Bizz and then climbed up onto the rimrock just for something to do. I sat for a minute on my ledge where Karen and I had lunch not too long ago. It was a little sad and I was a little lonely so I walked down the edge of the rock and took this picture looking back down where I had come from. I ended up finding another spot in the sun that gave me a nice view and sat there listening to music for a while. I am really missing Karen today and my walk just reminded me of her even more. Oh well, I guess I need to get used to it. Until I can find a place in Idaho Falls to move to this is as good as it's going to get.

There weren't many people out today and it was a pretty nice day albeit a little cool.

Karen leaves... again!

I'm getting real sick of this but I guess I'll just have to deal with it. I hate it when she leaves but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute I spent with her. We tried to spend some time in the sun and I took her to some of the spots I know like the petroglyphs at Belfast and my bench up on the hill.

Thanksgiving was a nice thing too this year, we all got together in Redding and had a family reunion. Karen got to meet all of them in one place, which might have been a little overwhelming for anyone else. Poor girl handled it well!

By the way, the date on this is not right, it's November 30 today.

Campfires...

Sittin' with the lady I want to be with by a campfire, what more can you ask for, huh? Karen and I made a trip to her property in Greenville and had lunch sitting by the fire. You needed a fire to keep warm since it was quite cold there and another thing, the gas prices in Greenville were $.48 cheaper than in Susanville. Gas there was $2.09 which was a real bargain compared to the price fixing situation in my town. I thought price fixing was illegal! OK, I'm off on a tangent, enough ranting for now.

So I've been hanging out with the lady I love and going for walks and just being with her before she has to head back to Idaho. I have to tell you, I'm not looking forward to that! But I have to stay in the moment I guess, so for now it it's all good! We are going down to Redding in a few days for Thanksgiving so she will be able to meet my family then, in fact all of them all in one fell swoop. Life is good! (For now!)

Walkin' and Talkin'

What could be better? Walking in the woods with a pretty lady and sitting in the sun on a rock is a great thing to do. We went out to the Dodge Mine area and had a nice walk and some good conversation. This is the good life! As you can see it was nice and warm and comfortable. Ya gotta love it... and I do, both the good times and the lady!

Enjoying Karen's visit!

The last couple of days I have been enjoying the company of the lady I am getting very attached to. I guess I could word that a little differently but I won't just yet. Anyway, we haven't been doing anything too special, just spending time together and that's what has been so enjoyable. Tomorrow we are going down to Downieville to have services for her brother Jim on Saturday. I'll be meeting her other brother Steven then and I'm looking forward to it, even though the occasion will be a solemn one. Karen has had a rough year and I am really hoping that her life will take a good turn now, she is a special lady and she has a special place in my heart.

Fishin' story

Well, it turned out to be a good day for my first fishing trip up to Eagle Lake this year. Due to the fact that I have been spending as much time as I can with Karen, I haven't had time for this until today.

I got out there before I could see my bobber very good after leaving town about 5:15. I got my first bite about 20 minutes later but that one came off. I hooked another a little later that I played for a long time but before I could slip the net under it, that one also came off. Finally I hooked one that stayed on and I ended up keeping that one. It was around 2 lbs and was the biggest one I caught today. I caught 2 more a little later but both of them were too small for me to keep so I let them go. I also had several other bites that I missed and one other fish that broke me off. All in all, it was a pretty good day and I left to come home about 9:30.

Before leaving some guy came walking up to me and when I turned to look at him I saw it was Gene Shannon. He had come up from Redding to fish with a friend of his and they both caught pretty good ones, they were much bigger than the ones I caught. Gene and his friend came over to my house when they were done fishing and we went up to the casino and had some lunch. It was good to see him and contrary to popular belief, he hasn't moved to Vanuatu yet.

So I caught 3 total and had lots of action, which is always good no matter if you hook them or not. Now I won't get back out there for a few weeks, probably early December at the soonest since I will be having Karen staying with me and I really don't want to drag her out there as uncomfortably cold as it was this morning. Besides I have all sorts of other stuff to do with her that is more suited to spending quality time together. Less than 24 hours left and I really can't wait!

Saturday, November 8, 2008

2 more days!

Ok, I'm chomping at the bit, I admit it. Karen is coming on Monday and it's not getting here soon enough for me. I guess it's funny how my life is so different now than it was just 6 months ago. It just goes to show you how quickly things can change, in this case for the better. This lady rocked my world and she continues to have a huge impact on me daily, and I love it!

Tomorrow morning I think I will get out to Eagle Lake for the first time fishing there this year. We have a little storm going through and that's usually the best time to catch a few, and maybe it will make the time go by a little faster. Making time go faster at my age? What am I saying? Well, you know! It's a matter of the heart.

My life keeps getting better!

Today Chris and I had a great hike up into the Skeedadle mountains near Wendel. We intended to hike into Spencer Basin and we got pretty close but time was a problem. We didn't want to come down after dark so we had to turn around about 2:00 to make it back to the truck before it got too late. We were also looking for some chukars, which we found and we even got some shooting in. I got one but Chris missed his. It started snowing around 1:00 and it was light so not much of a problem for us but it was not warm up there. The weather got worse as the day progressed and we did end up getting a little wet but not too much.
We tried to follow the ridge but the rocky terrain was slow going and in many places we had to drop over the side and work around rock piles. It was a grand adventure and I even brought home a little dinner guest.
But the real reason my life is getting so good is an impending visit from Karen. She is coming out to California again next week and I will get to spend some more time with her. I am so totally jazzed about that and have been a very happy guy ever since I got the news. Like I said, my life keeps getting better and better. I hope that doesn't end anytime soon. Ya gotta love it and I surely do!

Las Vegas with Karen... Yeah!!

I just got back from a fantastic weekend with Karen down in Las Vegas. I got to meet her sister Judy and Judy's husband Kirby as well as her nephew Brad and his new wife Betty. Brad and Betty were there to get married and that was the occasion for this trip. I couldn't make the wedding but I got there Thursday night and stayed till Karen flew home Monday. I stopped and slept in the desert Monday night and the stars were beautiful and it was nice and warm.

We got to visit Red Rock Canyon, go up to Mount Charleston to get some mountain air, and also drove out to Hoover Dam. No matter what we did it was all about the company.

On Saturday we went out to see Paul and his wife Pon and had dinner with them, which was a good time for Karen to meet my old high school friend. He's such a big kid and he had to show us his dog... a mechanical one that he says poops zero's and pee's ones... digital.

So it was a wonderful weekend and another memorable event in this crazy life of mine.

Headin' south tomorrow!

I'm off to the desert tomorrow afternoon. This time the desert is not what I'm going down there for, Karen is. The weather for the Vegas area over the weekend is supposed to be nice with temps in the mid 80's. Looks like I'll get to wear my shorts again.

This time the trip is going to have a different meaning for me, I've never made this drive with the prospect of seeing the lady I have a huge crush on. Did I say crush? Major understatement, I have to tell you, there is so much more to it than that. Needless to say I am terribly excited and the hours between now and then are going to drag by for me.

Bizz Johnson Trail

Had a nice slow ride up the Bizz today looking at the scenery and thinking about my favorite subject. The colors up here are a little more vibrant than the ones up Piute Creek where I was yesterday. I took my time and didn't get home till about 4:30. The late day angle of the sun gives everything a different hue so it was worth getting dinner started later than usual. Tomorrow I'm going to meet Chris and do a little quail hunting out at Laufman where I used to work. The station is closed now but the quail are usually in the area because of the springs.

The top picture here was taken at Cady Springs from the Bizz. The bottom one was the bridge just downstream from where the top picture was taken. Saw a few people today up there but the person I really want to see I won't get to see until Friday, but I guess I'll just have to wait for that. I can do that... I think.

Fall Color

Went up the park trail system yesterday for a short bike ride before heading up on the hill to sit on the bench and think for a while. The colors are somewhat subdued this year compared to last year, maybe because we had such a hard freeze last week that shocked some of the vegetation. I know that I saw trees around town that had leaves killed by that freeze and they didn't have a chance to turn colors. Anyway it was a pleasant day, fairly comfortable and sitting on the bench in the sun felt real good.

On Thursday I'm driving to Vegas and I won't be back till the first part of next week. To say that I am looking forward to spending a few days down there with Karen would be a huge understatement, and going to the desert this time of year will be a nice warm change of climate. Warm weather with the lady I want to spend time with, you can't beat that. Now all I have to do is get through the week!

Slackin'

Man... I'm slacking. I haven't posted anything for a few days and things have been happening in my life. Since I was the last holdout in the whole country that didn't have a cell phone, I finally got one. OK, I had a good reason finally for getting one, to keep in touch with someone I am getting very close to. Funny how your perspective changes. Anyway here I am, in a different place than I was several months ago and going in a direction that I never saw coming. WTF? It's all good and just where I'm supposed to be, I have no doubt about that.

Next week I'm making a trip down to Las Vegas to spend some time with Karen. She's attending a wedding and I couldn't be there for that but we will have the weekend to get out in the desert together and soak up some sun. Warm... YEAH!! I can't wait...

Early taste of winter... Yuk!!

I'm not ready for this. The highest I saw my thermometer get yesterday was 41° and I stayed indoors most of the day working on my distribution sheets, getting laundry done, and trying to stay busy to keep my mind off of missing a very important person in my life. It's supposed to warm up again this coming week so hopefully I can get out and get some pictures of the fall colors. At least that's my plan. Maybe as early as tomorrow... I can only hope. Any way you look at it, ya gotta love it!!

Lodi

I just got back from a fantastic week in Lodi with Karen. We spent the time finishing up a remodeling job on her brother's house so they could put it on the market. There was plenty to do but Karen had gotten most of the hard stuff done earlier in the year.

This house is an old one in a pretty nice neighborhood in Lodi. Karen's grandson Cody was staying with us and helping out, as well as a cast of characters that dropped in during the week and also did a bunch of work.

The interior woodwork was quite cool as you can see in these pictures. There was an old wood toilet with the tank high on the wall in the bathroom, and a claw foot bathtub. Of course my favorite thing about this last week was that I got to spend more time with Karen which meant more to me than anything, I'm crazy about this lady. Considering that we were also working together on a worthwhile project made it a very special event that I will never forget.

Meeting all the nice people who came to help including Karen's niece, nephew, his wife, and their friends and seeing how enthusiastic they were to pitch in was a great thing and a testament to the support that Karen has in her family.

It doesn't get much better than this!

Looking for fall

Today I rode up to Goumaz and back, checking out the fall colors that are starting to show up along the way. I love this first view and I have many pictures I've taken over the last several years of it in spring, summer and fall. No winter shots yet since I keep talking about getting into cross country skiing but never doing it... maybe this year. Today there was a play of shadows being cast by the clouds that gave it a slightly different look... at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Going down below Devil's Corral to where Cheeny Creek comes into the canyon the colors are getting nice but the sun wasn't cooperating. I took pictures anyway, what the hell, it's digital.

Today was the last day I'm going to get up there for a while and it's all good. Tomorrow I have to do a little shopping and pack for my trip to Lodi with Karen, which I am vewy, vewy excited about, I must say.
